Reverse

Crowned imperial arms supported by griffins, with crossed sword and scepter. Legend IMPERIO MEXICANO above, 1 PESO and 1866 Mo below. Motto EQUIDAD EN LA JUSTICIA on the ribbon.

Struck during the brief reign of Austrian Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg (1864–1867), who was installed as Emperor with French support under Napoleon III. The Second Mexican Empire faced strong republican resistance led by Benito Juárez and collapsed after the withdrawal of French troops. Maximilian was captured and executed by firing squad in June 1867. These pesos are the most recognizable silver coins of that turbulent three-year period.
