The Red Dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) is one of the oldest and most powerful symbols of Wales. Its roots stretch back over a millennium. According to ancient Welsh legend, preserved in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, two dragons — one red and one white — battled beneath Dinas Emrys. The young Merlin interpreted the vision: the red dragon represented the native Britons (the Welsh), while the white dragon symbolized the invading Saxons. The red dragon’s eventual victory foretold the endurance and triumph of the Welsh people.
Later associated with the 7th-century King Cadwaladr of Gwynedd, the red dragon became a lasting emblem of Welsh identity, resilience, and sovereignty. It was famously used by Henry Tudor (Henry VII) at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 as a symbol of his Welsh heritage, helping to rally support and cement the Tudor claim to the throne. Today it proudly flies on the national flag of Wales.
