1804 Bank of England Dollar – George III

A fascinating and historically important large silver Dollar issued by the Bank of England during the Napoleonic Wars. Due to severe silver shortages in Britain, the Bank overstruck captured Spanish colonial 8 Reales (often called “pieces of eight”) with new British dies. These were released to alleviate the coinage crisis and served as emergency currency.

Obverse: Laureate bust of George III right with “GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA REX.”

Reverse: Britannia seated within a garter, holding olive branch and spear, with “BANK OF ENGLAND” around and “FIVE SHILLINGS DOLLAR 1804” below.
